Singita Lebombo Lodge in South Africa

Singita Lebombo Lodge in South Africa

There is nothing like a long week’s worth of work to inspire daydreams of imaginary trips to the most remote places in the world. This time, our attention is drawn to the modern and earthy interiors of South Africa. We love the clean lines, unique wooden pieces, and ethnic references that furbish the spaces of Capetown and Johannesburg.

One of our favorites is the Singita Lebombo Lodge, a hotel tucked in the corner of Kruger National Park, where the philosophy is all about bringing the outdoors in. The owners opted for fewer rooms that were more spacious to create an intimate setting that allows guests to experience the best aspects of African wildlife and nature. Through out the lodge’s design, the focus is on creating harmony with the outdoors: wooden ceilings and furniture pay tribute to the hotel’s namesake, the Lebombo tree. The white Egyptian cotton bed linens and neutral furniture create a peaceful atmosphere that doesn’t compete with the beauty found outside. Lastly, the lodge’s owners wanted to inject a little bit of glamour to the design by including reflective glass chandeliers and polished nickel side tables.

Let’s face-it, even the least adventurous of us would jump at the chance to visit this natural paradise. But for those who don’t have a trip to South Africa in this year’s calendar, here are a few pieces to help you make it your own. The key is to keep all upholstered pieces neutral and opt for waxed or un-varnished wooden surfaces. If you want to go a step further and add a few African touches to your design, iringa baskets will be the perfect way to store throws and magazines in your living room. And if you live in an urban setting where greenery is sparse, why not include a large plant, such as a fig tree, to bring the outdoors in.
