Meet Amanda Jane Jones, Art Director and Graphic Designer

Meet Amanda Jane Jones, Art Director and Graphic Designer

We caught up with one of our favorite creative mamas, Amanda Jane Jones. You may recognize her exquisite eye for clean and minimalistic designs in , where she was co-creator and founding designer. While patiently waiting for baby #2, Amanda balances work and spending quality time with her husband Cree and adorable two-year old daughter, Jane.

We asked Amanda to share her insight on style, parenting, traveling, and more. Read on to learn about her favorite date night ideas with Cree, sweet sentiments with Jane, and her latest project, magazine, which launched today!

B+G: Describe yourself in five words

Amanda: mother, wife, designer, homebody, spiritual

B+G: You have a great eye and aesthetic, how do you translate your style in parenthood?

Amanda: my style has relaxed quite a bit since becoming a parent. Much more casual, simple and easy.

Well...I'm 37 weeks pregnant, so right now I basically live in big black baggy dresses and leggings. I'm all about comfort these days.

B+G: Baby #2 is on the way, how exciting! Is there anything you would do different this time around?

Amanda: Yes! I didn't understand that the newborn phase didn't last very long - those cuddly post nursing naps. I intend to make the most of those this time around - well, as much as my little two year old will let me. ;)

B+G: What advice would you give new parents?

Amanda: When I was expecting my first, I asked someone for advice and she said, "the best advice I can give you is not to listen to advice. You will know your baby and her needs better than anyone else." I still think about that often to this day and think it's so true. It's so important to follow your instinct as a mother.

B+G: What are the most important traits and values you hope to instill in your children?

Amanda: We really try to teach Jane (2 yrs) to be compassionate, to be kind, and loving to everyone. We also try very hard to teach her to be a helper.

B+G: You and your family have lived and traveled to so many amazing destinations from Switzerland to the Philippines. Which place was your favorite and why?

Amanda: It's so hard to pick! I'd say top three were Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Cape Point in Cape Town, South Africa.

B+G: Are there any other destinations on your wish list?

B+G: Name your top three things to do when you arrive somewhere new.

Amanda: We usually try to ask locals what they like to do, so we don't end up doing too many touristy things. Then we always find a good grocery store and stock up on all the local food so we can picnic while exploring. And lastly, we always try to find places to visit that are out away from the city we're in - remote places. Those are usually our favorite.

Amanda: I'm still trying to figure that out. Before I became pregnant with baby no.2, I'd wake up at 4:30am to get my work done before Jane woke up, but since nausea has been my constant companion this pregnancy, I've had to rework my schedule. My husband is really good about working with me to figure out a schedule that works for us both so we each get one on one time with our daughter and enough time to get our work done as well. I think I've just learned to go with the flow. The schedule we have one week might be completely different from the next, and we both have learned just to be okay with that.

B+G: What are some of your favorite date night adventures with Cree?

Amanda: We love to try new restaurants. We just went and saw the NPR news quiz show "Wait Wait don't tell me" live recording and that was a blast. Honestly though, we have such a great time, even if it's just a short bike ride to the beach and back. He really is my best friend.

B+G: As a creative mama, how do you share your love for music and design with Jane?

Amanda: Growing up, my mom had a closet filled with everything you could imagine - ribbons, fabric, paper, confetti, art supplies - I remember loving it and never felt like I had to ask permission to use anything - it was just there for our disposal. We've set up a little craft corner for her filled with similar things. She likes to sit and make necklaces and color. It's fun to see her start to enjoy little things like that. As for music, she loves to have music on. Always requesting the real upbeat songs...and she prefers to dance with her tutu and top hat on which is just the cutest thing to watch.

B+G: We read you love jazz, who are some of your favorite artists? I love Ella Fitzgerald, Mel Torme, Madeleine Peyroux, Django Reinhardt, Chet Baker, Charlie Parker and Stan Getz.

B+G: Can you give us some teasers of what you're working on next? Yes! I'm launching a new magazine next week (october 15th). It's an experimental arts magazine called, Define. Each issue focuses on one word defined by a unique set of artists through various mediums. It's a simple set up, but it's been inspiring and fascinating to see just how different artists can interpret the same thing! I'm so excited about it and can't wait to share it with the world.
